Film Review – Kevin Hart: What Now? (2016)
The following review of Kevin Hart: What Now? will be spoiler free.
Kevin Hart: What Now? is directed by Leslie Small and Tim Story and stars Kevin Hart as well as Halle Berry. The movie chronicles Hart’s What Now? Comedy Tour while adding a clever introduction to it all.
I’ve always been a fan of Kevin Hart. His shtick has always worked for me. Yes a lot of his jokes in movies circle around being small and having crazy bursts of energy, but I haven’t been annoyed (YET). His stand-up, however, has always been top notch and I watch it every time it comes on TV. He has so many classic bits and is absolutely one of the best stand-up comedians working today.
What I Didn’t Like
As for his next “movie” somewhat indulgently entitled “What Now?,” it was a mixed bag. The first section of the movie is clearly added on in an attempt to make this stand-up special a feature-length film. While it is enjoyable, I couldn’t get past the ploy that it is really only there to make people feel that they weren’t swindled out of their money. The performances were decent and I got a few laughs out of it, but I compare it to the apocalypse scene in Batman V Superman. While the scene itself was pretty cool, in the overall context of the movie it didn’t make much sense to be there in the first place. Although the beginning part of What Now? tried to tie in to the rest of the story like the apocalypse scene, I didn’t get that satisfaction the movie was going for.
As for the stand-up act itself, it is very funny, although it is not Hart’s best material. There were definitely some very solid laughs to be had (And Hart is an exceptional showman) but I still consider his earliest work to be his best. I do not want to give off the impression that I hated this movie (I most certainly did not). But I have come to have higher expectations for Hart and his stand-up.
Overall, Kevin Hart: What Now? is a very funny, albeit extremely unnecessary stand-up special/movie and really offers nothing worth the price of admission if you’ve seen the What Now? Tour in person. Because of this, I’m going to give Kevin Hart: What Now? a C.
