Marvel Releases New Teaser Trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

by Nick Kush

Late Saturday afternoon, Marvel released the new teaser trailer for the much anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which led to comic book fans everywhere absolutely losing their minds.  Other than the major tease that was released a couple weeks ago, the trailer (which you can watch here on YouTube) is the first major release of footage to the public.

While Marvel Studios is keeping a major synopsis of the sequel under wraps, we do know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will further explore Star-Lord’s father and his family history while deepening the bond between the team members with a possible relationship blossoming between Star-Lord and Gamora.

So far with my trailer reviews I’ve been sure to share elements of the trailer that make me nervous about the final product of the movie, but this trailer is way too awesome to even nitpick.  This is the perfect trailer for a Guardians of the Galaxy movie.  The team looks to be back in full force, bringing all the fun, heart, and zaniness to the sequel that made us love the original so much.  After the calculated risk in making the first Guardians movie paid off for Marvel, it seems that the studio gave director James Gunn and the rest of the creative team almost complete independence to go absolutely bonkers in Volume 2.  We could be getting a Guardians of the Galaxy movie on steroids, which sounds fantastic.

As for particulars, where else do I begin other than Baby Groot?  He’s so damn adorable and hilarious, Marvel is sure to hit the mother load in toy sells off of him.  The bit with him and Rocket Raccoon about the atomic bomb button is hysterical and is bumped up to the nth degree with Groot’s adorable features and high-pitched voice.  He’s going to add a completely different dimension to the sequel than his former tall self added to the first film.  The one piece of action we saw from Groot in the trailer (where he chased down what looked like a ravager and flung him off a catwalk) was equally parts cute and hilarious.  I’m grinning from ear to ear just writing about it.

Dave Bautista seems to be enjoying himself again as Drax (who might have been my favorite part of the first film).  We see all the typical things we love from him whether it’s be the hyper violence or the way too on the nose dialogue from his inability to grasp sarcasm or subtlety.  The closing joke with him making fun of Star-Lord because an alien spilled the beans on his love for Gamora was perfect to his character and the tone of the Guardians as a whole.

I’m also very intrigued by the development of Star-Lord that the footage we’ve seen is hinting to us.  Even though the first footage released by Marvel was a serious tease, it had a funny bit between Drax and Star-Lord at the end circling around Gamora.  Then, as mentioned above, the ending of this trailer has another tease of Star-Lord’s love for Gamora.  I’m very intrigued for what Guardians 2 does with their relationship.  It will most likely be a very prevalent side-plot to the rest of the weird alien commotion surrounding the Guardians.  Also, since we will be meeting Star-Lord’s father in this movie, it might make for a fun exchange if Star-Lord introduces Gamora to him as his girlfriend.  Kurt Russell was casted to play Star-Lord’s father and will be the character Ego, the Living Planet.  A freaked out planet complaining to Star-Lord about his taste in women could be gut-busting funny.

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 looks humorous, action-packed, and weird, which is absolutely perfect.  May 5th, 2017 needs to get here sooner so we can bask in the glory of “I am Groot” being said over and over again when Guardians hits theaters.

Have you seen the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer?  What do you think?  Are you more or less excited for the movie after watching it (but let’s be honest here, you’re definitely more excited)?  Comment at the bottom of the page and let me know!
