MovieBabble’s Dream Movie Projects…Part 2

Last month, I released an article discussing certain dream movie projects that I would like to see someday.  It was fun to talk about movies I’d like to see.  So let’s do it again!

This second installment in my dream movie projects series will begin a semiregular series that will occur every month.  So check back in regularly!

Without further ado, here’s some more dream movie projects:

Crime Drama Directed by M. Night Shyamalan

A few months ago, many would have scoffed at this idea.  However, Shyamalan’s Split was a huge success, grossing about $277 million on a mere $9 million budget.  The film was also a hit with critics, marking Shyamalan’s first certified fresh film on Rotten Tomatoes since Signs back in 2002.

After he finishes his next film, Glass, Shyamalan would be great to helm a project that revolves around some type of crime.  Considering that his films with smaller budgets have done a lot better than his blockbusters, a crime drama would give him every opportunity to flex his muscles as a writer without becoming focused on world building.

Imagine a crime caper that pulls out the rug from underneath you in typical Shyamalan fashion.  Where do I sign up?

Cleopatra Movie Directed by Patty Jenkins

This may seem like a quirky choice to join my other dream movie projects, but there’s some logic behind it.

Jenkins is soaring high after Wonder Woman and now has the capability to do just about any project she wants.  For her next project, she should tackle a property that sorely needs a facelift: Cleopatra.

Other than the 1999 version starring Leonor Varela (who?), the only version we’ve gotten of the Egyptian figure was the 1963 version that had Elizabeth Taylor in the lead role.  Also, that movie is four hours long, making it almost impossible to watch more than once.  We haven’t had a great Egyptian or swords and sandles movie in quite some time.

Jenkins has an obvious flare for a regal feel, making it possible for to truly capture the spirit of Cleopatra (hopefully with an actor of the correct race).

Sequel to District 9

Most of us were amazed when District 9 was released in theaters.  Not only was it a neat science fiction concept, but is also had a lot of solid social commentary woven into the story.

However, Neill Blomkamp’s next two feature films, Elysium and Chappie, left a little to be desired, causing Blomkamp to start up a studio primarily focused on making short films.  The man was even tapped to direct Alien 5 before Ridley Scott quickly shot that idea down.

There’s no question that the man still has talent.  Like M. Night Shyamalan, maybe he just needs to go back to his roots.  District 9 left the doors open for more movies in the universe, so a sequel may actually be a good idea.

Deathstroke Movie Directed by Jennifer Kent

When Ben Affleck was still acting as the director of his upcoming Batman film, it was announced that the villain for the film would be Deathstroke, a fascinating character that has yet to be seen in film.  Sources even announced that Joe Manganiello would play the villain. However, once Affleck stepped down as director and Matt Reeves replaced him, the script was scrapped in favor of a page one rewrite, making it very possible that Deathstroke won’t be the villain.

However, Deathstroke is still a fascinating character with a dark, tortured backstory, making him a prime candidate for his own film.  The best director for the job may be Jennifer Kent, director of The Babadook.  She’s been fairly quiet since that movie’s release and deserves more work in Hollywood than she’s getting.  She also showed an expert ability to weave themes and dark tones together, traits that would be sorely needed to tell Deathstroke’s story.

Bond Film Directed by Christopher Nolan

This one may be the most self-explanatory of my dream movie projects.

There are a few requirements to be a director of a Bond film.  The main one is that you need to be British.  Check!

But in all seriousness, Nolan would be able to capture the caustic side of Bond with the best of them.  The main issues with recent Bond movies (Quantum of Solace and Spectre) has been a convoluted script mixed with poor direction given to actors.  Nolan has proven that he’s capable of writing a tight script that also is complex, allowing the allure of intrigue to take root in this hypothetical Bond film.

But let’s be honest, we’d see Nolan direct just about anything at this point.

Napoleon Movie Starring Tom Cruise

That joke is probably low-hanging fruit, but there’s actually some intrigue behind this idea.

Back in the day, Stanley Kubrick actually had plans to direct an epic Napoleon film, but lacked studio backing which made plans for the film to fall apart.  There surprisingly hasn’t been a film on the famous figure, making one question when one will actually happen.

If it were ever to happen, Tom Cruise would be a great choice, and not just for his height.  We haven’t seen Cruise be a villain in quite some time.  Nowadays, he’s merely a slick action man that works back and forth between short and long hair.  How great would it be to see Cruise freak out again like in Collateral?

Cruise needs to be a villain again.  He has too much of a magnetic personality to not be memorable in such a role.

Gangster Film Directed by Matt Reeves

Reeves is riding high after finishing off the Apes franchise strong.  While he’s now hard at work at crafting The Batman, Reeves needs to get his hands dirty by directing a gangster film.  His brutal but honest sentimentality would blend nicely into a mob flick filled with larger than life characters at its center.

Reeves understands character, a skill that a mob movie desperately needs.  Even within special effects heavy films like War for the Planet of the Apes, the heart of the story remains with the characterization.

He’s also shown a desire to work with darker films, making a gangster film full of killing right up his alley and worthy of one of my dream movie projects.
