April 2018 Movie Preview

April is normally the bridge to the summer movie season, containing a very eclectic group of films from week to week.  April 2018 is very similar to the described template, but with a notable change to the formula: Avengers: Infinity War.  Marvel’s biggest film yet shifted its release forward from the first weekend in May, forcing every other movie within two weeks of it to shift around to another release date.  Ahh, the luxuries of being a sure-thing hit at the box office.  You know when that movie’s coming out, so keep an eye on some other films that are part of the April 2018 movie preview:

As the promotional material for A Quiet Place says, “if they hear you, they hunt you.”  Set in an alternate, desolate, Earth, a family of four (led by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt) must survive an onslaught of mysterious monsters that hunt based on sound, meaning that everyone must stay quiet — or die.  The creature feature opened at SXSW to rave reviews and currently sits at a whopping 100% on Rotten Tomatoes as I write this article.  The film is said to play heavily off of its great sound design, remaining silent for minutes on end as the tension grows.  Let’s hope your audience doesn’t ruin the movie for you!

Chappaquiddick starring Jason Clarke, Kate Mara, Ed Helms, Jim Gaffigan, and Bruce Dern tells the story of the Chappaquiddick incident where Ted Kennedy drove his car off a bridge and into the water off of Martha’s Vineyard back in the summer of 1969, killing the passenger in the process.  Yours truly had the opportunity to attend an earlier screening of the film, and it is definitely a must-see for any politically-inclined person.  Showcasing Jason Clarke’s career-best performance, the movie is a great, dialogue-driven drama that isn’t afraid to show the darker side of the Kennedy family.

Blockers appears primed to become a great raunchy comedy with stars John Cena, Leslie Mann, and Ike Barinholtz leading the way as parents attempting to stop their kids from having sex on prom night.  However, I’ll be first in line for You Were Never Really Here — and you should be too.  Called the Taxi Driver of the 21st century, YWNRH premiered at Cannes last year to great reviews.  Fellow MovieBabble staffer Stephen Finlay wrote a glowing review of the film as well — and you should trust his word!

Beirut is the only film with an April 11th release.  While it opened to solid reviews at festivals, controversy over the film’s depiction of the Middle East has caused serious outcry from people all over the world.  Written by Tony Gilroy, the fictitious film doesn’t seem to have the most accurate depiction of Beirut, showcasing war-torn cityscapes and stereotypical Muslim terrorist figures.  It may entertain on a purely visceral level, but today’s culture is proving that culturally insensitive films won’t fly anymore.

Then again, we should all probably see the film first before making judgements on out-of-context clips that are spliced together in a trailer.

“Of course the wolf flies” says The Rock as one of three massive, CGI animals flies over his head in the trailer for Rampage.  That same trailer also says “big meets bigger.”  Basically, Rampage is another silly blockbuster from The Rock, and it’ll probably be a lot of fun.  The Rock knows how to capture a silly tone to his action vehicles, so this one might become a fan-favorite.

Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare will probably turn another nice profit for the production company off of another small budget, but everyone should focus on Borg vs McEnroe — with Shia LaBeouf as John McEnroe.  Talk about perfect casting!

The next Amy Schumer vehicle moved up from a summer release to April, hoping that it could capture the box office before Infinity War comes in and sucks up all the money at the box office.  The trailer for the film again sparked controversy with its depiction of body image, and that’s the last thing that Schumer needed as her popularity with the general public continues to decline.

As for other main attraction of the week, Super Troopers 2 is finally coming to theaters seventeen years after the release of the original — and on 4/20 no less.  Talk about smart marketing.

Every studio with a major release is looking to avoid Infinity War, so the weekend before its release is somewhat of a wasteland.

You already know about Infinity War, so let me introduce you to an indie selection that you might find interesting:

Disobedience stars Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams and follows a woman (Weisz) that was shunned from the Jewish community after people around her learned of her attraction to a childhood friend (McAdams).  Now, after returning to the religious community, the attraction arises once more, threatening the balance of the community and McAdams’ character’s life as a now married woman.

Ehh, who I am kidding, you just want to see Thanos throw a moon, don’t you?
