The Most Trustworthy People in Hollywood (I Hope)

I’m so tired of seeing that this actor or this actress has been involved in a scandal of some sort. I’m so sick of getting attached to actors only to find that they’re actual douchebags in real life. Hollywood is just full of scoundrels and horrible people. Are there any trustworthy people in the cinematic wonderland?

I choose to look on the bright side of life; it seems to me that an entire city cannot consist entirely of douchebags. There has to be a glimmer of hope somewhere. So, for the time being (at least for as long as it takes me to write this), I’m going to pretend that we live in a perfect world. We can look up to our favorite actors and actresses without fearing for their questionable morality. And, in a perfect world, these are the people I would hope would be the most trustworthy.

#10: Ellen Degeneres

I’m going to be really blunt here so please forgive me: I don’t care if you’re gay, straight, or somewhere in between — it’s impossible not to like Ellen Degeneres. In addition to hosting her own talk show and starring on her own sitcom in the 90s, she’s also a prominent philanthropist and donates much of her income to charity. Ellen loves to make people laugh and smile. It’s hard to find anything to hate about her, honestly. I sincerely hope that the slanderers and whistleblowers of Hollywood never find anything bad about Ellen, because she is one of my biggest role models. If anything, her only flaw is that she’s too funny.

#9: Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood is like your crotchety grandfather who yells at you for spilling some milk on the dining room table but then winks at you and gives you a BB gun to go shoot in the backyard; don’t act like you didn’t resonate perfectly with that scenario. While an accomplished actor, Eastwood is one of the greatest directors of our time. His films are fantastic pieces of cinema and for that reason alone he deserves a spot on this list. Some of my favorite Eastwood-directed films are Million Dollar Baby (2004), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), and Sully (2016). Honestly, with films like these, it’s hard not to admire him.

#8: Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington is one of the most badass actors out there, but he’s also one of the most well-respected in his field. With films like Remember the Titans (2000), Malcolm X (1992), Glory (1989), and The Pelican Brief (1993), his filmography speaks for itself. Washington is a prestigious actor with more talent in one facial expression than more people have their entire lives. Not only that, but throughout all of the drama that goes on Hollywood, Washington has managed to stay relatively neutral; he donates to charity, serves as a national spokesman for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and even has participated in Purple Heart ceremonies. Tell me he doesn’t deserve to be on the list.

#7: Meryl Streep

Sure, Meryl Streep has taken a little heat recently in the #MeToo movement, but she definitely hasn’t lost much respect in many people’s lives. Some of her more popular films include Mamma Mia! (2008), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Sophie’s Choice (1982), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), and Into the Woods (2014). While many may not agree with her views, it’s worth noting that at least she stands up for them, often challenging sexist and racist platforms of institutions and other actors. Streep stands up for the little guy with her elite status and (though I know many will disagree with me) I believe she has earned a spot on my list.

#6: Ron Howard

Sometimes, if I look hard enough, I can still see little Opie Taylor when I look at Ron Howard. That, or Richie Cunningham. But Ron Howard has become so much more than just the clean-cut boy stuck in the 1950s. Since his Happy Days, Howard has directed such great films like A Beautiful Mind (2001), Apollo 13 (1995), American Graffiti (1973), and The Da Vinci Code (2006). Ron Howard is the man that we should all strive to be honestly; instead of settling for being just a TV actor known for being an innocent redhead, he ventured out into the world of making movies and created some of the best films all around.

#5: Sandra Bullock

Ever since the first time I watched While You Were Sleeping (1995), Sandra Bullock has been one of my favorite actresses. When I saw her in The Proposal (2009) and The Blind Side (2009), my love for her only grew. And when I saw that she was starring in Ocean’s 8 (2018), I realized that Sandra Bullock was probably the greatest actress ever. Bullock lives up to the moniker of “America’s sweetheart” with her charming smile, her sweet nature, and the fact that she is one of the more genuine people in Hollywood. She is a philanthropist, an actress, a businesswomen, an activist, and a great person all-around.

#4: Maggie Smith

I don’t know of anybody who doesn’t like Maggie Smith. From her roles in Harry Potter to Downton Abbey, she’s the sassy Brit that everyone loves. Smith is the grandmother that we all wanted. She is an avid supporter of the arts and has even been a Dame since 1990; now, I’m not British, but it seems that if you receive any title from the Queen, you’re pretty dang special. Maggie Smith is pretty dang special. In a way, I think she’s who we all aspire to be: witty and fun-loving all throughout our days.

#3: James Earl Jones

There are very few men who have been gifted with golden voices. Sure, everyone goes crazy over Morgan Freeman, but let’s not forget the original smooth voice master — Mr. James Earl Jones. Maybe best known for his roles as Darth Vader in the Star Wars series and Mufasa in The Lion King (1994), there is absolutely nothing I don’t love about this man. In addition to some beautiful voice acting, he’s also in memorable family films like Field of Dreams (1989), The Sandlot (1993), and Robots (2005). James Earl Jones is the kind of guy that I would want to hang out with because he could tell me stories for days. He’s just so pure and reminds me of childhood.

#2: Betty White

Betty White is my soul animal. At 96 years old, she’s still as sassy and crazy as ever; plus, she’s older than sliced bread, which is pretty awesome. She’s been in some pretty hilarious films, like The Proposal (2009), You Again (2010), and The Lorax (2012). While she’s known mainly for her comedic talent, she’s also a strong activist and advocates for the rights of animals and humans alike. White is a prestigious actress with many awards and honors to her name, but why do we love her so much? Simple — she’s who we all want to be when we grow up. We all want to be as sassy and as funny and as fun-loving as her when we grow old. After all, life is about having fun.

#1: Tom Hanks

Honestly, is anyone surprised at this point? I’m pretty sure this is like the fifteenth time I’ve mentioned my boy Tom Hanks in the past five articles. But who could blame me? Tom Hanks is the absolute greatest actor in Hollywood (there will be no debate on this). He’s a devoted family man, a philanthropist, a hilarious guy, a friend to everyone he comes across, super nice to his friends, and he’s been in some of our favorite movies. Hanks would be the kind of guy to get every girl in high school a flower on Valentine’s Day. He’s the guy who apologizes when you step on his shoe. Tom Hanks is just the greatest man in Hollywood and I love him so much.
