Film Review – 22 July (2018) [Watch]

22 July

It’s safe to say that you’re in for a harrowing tale when you decide to watch a Paul Greengrass film. The acclaimed director has such a keen eye for cinematic realism; sometimes the events taking place within the movie are simply too difficult for some viewers to handle (even if they aren’t necessarily completely factual). He never holds your hand. Rather, he throws you into the deep end. 22 July is an extension of Greengrass’ past work as it depicts one of the darker days in Norway’s modern history.

The following review will be spoiler free.

Directed By: Paul Greengrass

Written By: Paul Greengrass

Starring: Anders Danielsen Lie, Jonas Strand Gravli, Jon Øigarden, Isak Bakli Aglen, Maria Bock, Thorbjørn Harr, and Seda Witt

On 22 July 2011, 77 people were killed when a far-right extremist detonated a car bomb in Oslo before carrying out a mass shooting at a leadership camp for teens. 22 July uses the lens of one survivor’s physical and emotional journey to portray the country’s path to healing and reconciliation.
